Building Better Futures Through Gaming
Empowering incarcerated individuals with essential life skills
Our Mission
Personal Development Through Gaming Foundation empowers incarcerated individuals to build essential life skills through the strategic, collaborative world of tabletop gaming. We create safe, engaging environments where participants develop critical thinking, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills—preparing them for successful reentry and meaningful futures beyond the walls.
What We Do
Teaching Life Skills Through Play
We run structured tabletop role-playing game sessions (including D&D 5e) at correctional facilities across Texas. Each session is designed to teach practical skills in a low-stakes, high-engagement format.
Skills We Teach
- Collaborative Problem-Solving: Working together toward shared goals
- Decision-Making Under Pressure: Evaluating options and accepting consequences
- Emotional Regulation: Managing frustration, celebrating success, supporting teammates
- Strategic Thinking: Planning ahead, anticipating outcomes, adapting to change
- Communication: Expressing ideas clearly, active listening, conflict resolution
- Accountability: Following through on commitments, taking responsibility for choices
Who Can Participate
Our programs are open to incarcerated individuals seeking personal growth in a supportive, engaging environment. We also welcome outside volunteers who want to help participants develop these critical skills.
Where We Operate
Currently serving 26-32 participants at Sanders Estes Unit. We plan to expand to additional facilities across Texas in the near future.
Our Story
Personal Development Through Gaming Foundation launched in early 2025 to address a critical gap: incarcerated individuals need practical life skills, but traditional educational programming often struggles with engagement and retention. By using tabletop games as the teaching medium, we've created a program where learning feels like play—and participants show up eager to grow.
What started as a single gaming group at Sanders Estes has grown into a thriving program with four separate campaigns, multiple facilitators, and quarterly tournaments. We're building something sustainable, scalable, and transformative.
